MANILA, PHILIPPINES- Manila and Brasilia will sign two agreements on biofuel production and agribusiness.
"Brazil is a developing nation that has burst into the international scene the last decade. Brazil has become a voice for the special challenges of a developing nation as well as innovator in biofuels," President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said upon arriving in Recife, Brazil Monday, according to a Palace dispatch.
She said the agreements would promote food and fuel self-sufficiency.
Mrs. Arroyo will proceed to the capital Brasilia tomorrow for a bilateral meeting with her counterpart, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
She will witness the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Agriculture and Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply and another memorandum of understanding between the Philippine Agricultural Development and Commercial Corp. and the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corp.
The agreement on agriculture involves collaboration in livestock and animal health, biofuel feedstock and development, dairy, horticulture, food safety, agri-business management, sustainable land management, genetics and biotechnology, processing and post-harvest technologies and agricultural machineries, and plant and animal science.
Under plant and animal science, the two countries will look into disease control, quarantine, pest surveillance, pest risk analysis, and cooperation in inspection procedures for international transit of animal and plants products.
The second agreement will allow cooperation in science and technology.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto G. Romulo will also sign with his counterpart an Agreement on Remunerated Employment of Dependents of Diplomatic, Consular and Administrative and Technical Personnel.
The accord will allow dependents of Filipino and Brazilian personnel in their diplomatic and consular missions to work in host countries.
